This image was taken at Angkor, in Siem Reap, Cambodia — an ancient complex spanning over 400 square kilometres, with hundreds of temples built between the 9th and 15th centuries at the height of the Khmer Empire. We stayed for over a week so we could reach as many of the far-flung temples as possible, from dawn to dusk, never quite able to get enough of the ruins and the great trees growing up through the stone. Each day a local man picked us up in his tuk-tuk, his daughter alongside, and carried us from temple to temple.

These two girls were at one of them. As we were leaving, they asked us to take their portrait — and when we showed them the back of the camera, they were elated. This is one of the great joys of travelling: the small moments where language is a barrier and yet humanity crosses it anyway. The connection you find in a simple, shared act is one of the reasons we love it so much.
