This image was made on our four-month road trip across America — and of all the things we love about that country, it is the great open expanses we love the most. The endless roads, the horizon that never quite arrives, and at every junction the quiet thrill of choice: do we go left, or right? Each turn a different life, a sliding door swinging open. There is a freedom in it we have found nowhere else.

We have always been drawn to that freedom through those who chased it before us — Robert Frank's The Americans, Jack Kerouac's On the Road — the restless romance of movement, of a country best understood from behind the wheel. This is our own small piece of it: life in motion.
