She Came to Be Seen

We were in Hpa-An for Thingyan, Myanmar's traditional New Year water festival — when millions take to the streets with buckets and hoses, splashing water to wash away the sins, bad luck and illness of the year before. This was the day before it all began. We seemed to be the only Westerners in town, and great excitement greeted us on every corner. As we walked and photographed, this lady saw us, came over, and asked us to take her portrait. There is such a gentleness to the people of Myanmar — a warmth we have never forgotten.
