Rising at 5:15am we head out to observe Tak Bat. The saffron clad monks leave their various monasteries at sunrise and walk in silence down the streets of Luang Prabang to collect alms. Local women are out there ahead of them, ready with their bowls of sticky rice. Each monk receives a scoop full which the women place in their large lidded bowls they carry.
This ritual is such a beautiful act to observe. Everything is done in complete silence. The monks walk in meditation, the almsgivers out of respect do not disturb the monks peace. This symbiotic relationship is repeated every day. The monks need the food, the almsgivers receive merit for their acts of giving, obtaining spiritual redemption.
Such a wonderful way to start your day we got up early every morning of our stay in Luang Prabang to sit and watch.
