We visited COPE (Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise) today which is a locally run non-profit organisation providing comprehensive rehabilitation services for Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) survivors and other people with disabilities across Lao. There are currently only two prosthetic providers in Lao.
The history of how many bombs the US dropped on Laos during the Vietnam war and the ongoing damage is absolutely criminal. The United States bombed Laos almost daily for nine years, a country that they were not even at war with. Thats more bombs on Laos than on Germany and Japan combined during World War II.
Over 280 million bombs were dropped on Laos. Statistically according to the UN Laos per capita is the most bombed country on the planet. It’s estimated that up to 80 million of them never exploded and it is estimated that it will take up to 3000 years to clean them up.
Laos experienced more than 30,000 casualties during the bombings, and more than 20,000 people have died since the bombing ceased in 1974 due to various leftover unexploded munitions.
Every year some 300 people are injured, maimed or killed due to unexploded bombs still. Kids playing in the fields, men or women working the land, even cooking your dinner over a fire can heat the ground an cause detonation.
